Bio
Yanai Toister (Ph.D.) is an artist, writer, and educator whose work explores the intersections of design, visual information, and media theory. He is Associate Professor of Visual Information in the Communication Sciences Unit at Tampere University, Finland. His artistic practice spans photography, installation, and computational aesthetics, and has been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including at Sandroni.Rey, Los Angeles; Dvir Gallery, Tel Aviv; Kunsthalle Luzern, Switzerland; Bolsky Gallery, Otis College of Art and Design, Los Angeles; Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris; the 11th International Architecture Exhibition at the Venice Biennale; Kunstmuseen Krefeld, Haus Lange, Germany; and the Israel Museum. Toister’s writing engages with visual culture, design epistemology, and the aesthetics of computation. His work has been published in exhibition catalogues and academic journals such as Digital Creativity, Flusser Studies, Journal of Visual Art Practice, Journal of Science and Technology of the Arts, Philosophy of Photography, and Photographies. His book, Photography from the Turin Shroud to the Turing Machine (Intellect / University of Chicago Press), traces the conceptual shifts linking image-making technologies to systems of knowledge and perception.
